Budget Beauty and Grooming Products I Used Back In High School

Ah, high school life… how I wish I could go back in time… Things were easier back then and my toiletry and makeup bags were much smaller too. I didn’t wear much makeup but I can tell you that there was one makeup item I couldn’t live without ~ eyebrow pencils.  I had bad eyebrows all throughout high school; not because my eyebrows were naturally bad, but because I over plucked and messed with them (long story). I used many inexpensive products back then and although they were low cost items, they are very good products that got the job done and more. In fact, some of these products are ones that I still continue to use. Let me share some of them with you…

Ever Bilena Eyebrow Pencils

My saving grace were Ever Bilena Color Pencils. First of all, they don’t cost much but they delivered great results. I believe they were only 50 PHP (Philippine Peso) each. They saved my eyebrows but some of my high school pictures may prove otherwise however, they were incredible and they did the job of hiding the fact that my eyebrows were once over plucked to the point that they were non-existent. I remember the pencil gliding on smoothly because it was so soft. I made the mistake of buying shades which were too dark though. If I could go back in time, I would re-do many things including my eyebrows! Joking aside, I absolutely love the Ever Bilena makeup range and most of all, their eyebrow pencils.

I loved Chapstick and every kind of flavour. I loved ‘Cherry’ the most. It’s great to use to soften the lips and chapsticks smell amazing. It’s like a cult favourite for many even now.

Rimmell London ‘Glam Eyes’ Eyeliner

This is still proving to be my go-to eyeliner especially when I’m on the go. I don’t have much patience for gel eyeliners in pots when I’m on the go. Don’t get me wrong, I love other eyeliners from different makeup brands but this Rimmell Glam Eyes Eyeliner is the only one I keep in my handbag. For only £5.29, you can’t really go wrong with this at all. It lasts a long time and doesn’t smudge. I’ve been using this product for around 16 years now and I’m still in love with it.

Pantene Pro-V Shampoo

I used Pantene products for many years and when I was little all the way up to my early high school years, I used Pantene Pro- V shampoos and conditioners. Whenever I used them, my hair was always silky smooth and the products smell really good.

Cream Silk Conditioner

Cream Silk Conditioners are most definitely one of my favourite conditioners ever back in the days. Unfortunately, they don’t sell them in stores here in the UK. I think this product can be ordered online but nowadays I just choose to buy the matching shampoos and conditioners. I remember buying the black Cream Silk conditioner for dark hair. That particular Cream Silk conditioner shade made my hair so shiny. Oh, Cream Silk conditioners smell amazing too and whenever I go to the Philippines, I always make sure I buy myself a bottle or two to take with me.

Johnson’s Baby Oil

This product is something I still use even today. I’m sure there are many uses for this product but mostly, I use it to soften my skin, particularly my elbows and knees. It’s great to add a few drops of this oil in the bath as well and it’s an overall great moisturiser. When I was in elementary school, I used this for my hair as well for that extra shine. Be careful if you do use this for your hair though because a little goes a long way. If you use too much, you’ll risk having greasy hair.

Johnson’s Baby Lotion

Just like the baby oil, this was one of my favourite skin lotions. It’s a gentle moisturiser which has a nice scent. It dried fast and didn’t leave my skin too greasy. Baby lotions are formulated for delicate skin so I love that this isn’t too heavily formulated with too many ingredients which may be harmful to sensitive skin.

Bench Body Sprays

I used to buy so many Bench body sprays back when I was in high school. Body sprays were the craze back then. I can’t believe that I’ve now forgotten the name of the fragrance I loved the most out of their collection but I’m sure that when I go back to Manila, I’ll be able to find it again (hopefully they still stock them?) The ones I used to buy were the ones in the pink body spray can with a white cap.

Milcu Deodorant

Milcu Deodorants were definitely all over our house. My mother used this product too. It definitely did the job and it’s super cheap so everyone can definitely afford this product. I believe this product is made from ‘Tawas’ crystals and it’s fragrance free which is even better because it’s made of all natural ingredients.

Colgate was the only tooth paste brand my family used for many years. There’s this joke in the Philippines where someone goes:

‘Ate, pabili ng Colgate…’

(lady hands her over the Colgate toothpaste)

‘Hindi ito… yung ‘Close Up’!’

That’s the thing, the brand ‘Colgate’ has served as a replacement word for ‘toothpaste’ in the Philippines. That’s how popular this brand is. Colgate Whitening with Crystal beads were also one of our favourites.

These are just some of the products I used back then and if you want, perhaps you can also give them a try!
